Periodontic and General Periodontal Procedure Dental PicturesAvoiding Tooth Extractons - An Anatomy
It is generally known by practically every dentist and almost every dental patient that tooth extractions are a popular "treatment" for a problematic tooth. In many cases, a tooth extraction is sensible treatment. In many other cases, however, tooth extraction can and should be avoided. For patients considering reconstructive or rehabilitative dentistry, finding a way to utilize the existing root structure is far better than removing a seemingly "lost" tooth in preparation for an implant device.
As the before picture readily shows, a tooth structure does not exist above the gum level. This condition may lead many consumers to conclude that a tooth extraction is in order. Tooth extractions lead to rapid decline of jawbone integrity. Dental implants have become the gold standard of tooth replacement since they function as an artificial root form structure that provides important tissue stimulation properties that have long term beneficial effects for preserving overall jawbone structures. But... with proper preparation and build up, a seemingly bad tooth can have a healthy root structure that can be saved and treated, avoiding what may be unnecessary implant surgery, possible bone grafting and eventual restoration. As can be seen in the post operative photo, sufficient structure has been exposed which can be prepared for alternative tooth replacement treatments. Michigan Periodontist Joseph R. Nemeth, D.D.S.
